Philanthropist and agricultural executive James R. Maxwell founded Agriland Farming Co. in 1990. Outside his career in agriculture, James Maxwell is involved in several charitable organizations and is a long-standing member of the Boy Scouts of America, having earned the designation of Eagle Scout as a youth.
The Eagle Scout designation has a reputation far beyond the Boy Scouts of America organization. Even those not involved understand it to be a rank of great honor and distinction. To apply for the Eagle Scout designation, certain requirements must be met before the Scout reaches their eighteenth birthday. Eagle Scouts must first have served as a Life Scout for at least six months and obtained at least 21 merit badges. They are also required to meet specific leadership requirements, even proposing and completing a project to benefit another organization outside the Boy Scouts of America.
The very first Scout to be awarded this distinction was Arthur Rose Eldred, a member of Troop 1 located in the town of Ocean Side, New York. His brother, Hubert, founded Troop 1 in November 1910, and Arthur became an Eagle Scout in 1912. After earning his 21st merit badge in April of that year, Arthur appeared before a board of review for his final examination. In August, he was notified that he had passed and would receive his merit badge, the first Eagle Scout badge ever granted, after Labor Day. Today, that badge is on display in the National Scouting Museum.
